August 4, 2012 - Tropical Storm Saola (10W) and Typhoon Damrey (11W) approaching China

The ninth and tenth typhoons of the Northwest Pacific storm Season, Saola and Damrey, brought torrential rains to coastal China on August 3, 2012. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured this true-color image on August 2, as both storms neared China's coastline.

Damrey, the more northerly storm in this image and the smaller storm of the two, made landfall in Jiangsu Province at 13:30 UTC (21:30 CST), according to the Xinhua News Agency. Saola came ashore a few hours later in Fujian Province.

Saola had its beginnings on July 22 as a tropical disturbance near Palau. On July 28 the storm had increased in strength and received the title of Tropical Storm. The storm was named Saola by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) and Gener by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Saola brought heavy rain and flooding to the Philippines and Taiwan before coming making landfall in China.

Damrey formed quickly, beginning as a tropical disturbance late on July 26, and becoming a tropical storm by July 28. Typhoon Damrey passed through the Osumi Islands in Japan at Category 1 strength on August 1 before passing over the Yellow Sea and arriving on the China mainland two days later.

Damrey was reported have struck Jiangsu Province with wind gusts to 126 km/h (78 mph) and brought heavy rain to the region. Saola was a tropical storm at landfall, with winds of 90 km/h at the center, according to China?s official Xinhua news agency.

Both storms caused considerable damage, primarily due to rain and flooding. The Philippines reported 37 deaths with additional people injured or missing. In Taiwan, five people were killed and two were reported missing as of August 3. Although there were no reported casualties in Fujian province, the government reported that it had evacuated 306,000 people by the morning of August 3.

Damrey caused evacuation of 1,900 in Shandong, where 174 millimeters (6.9 inches) of rain were reported, as well as two deaths and numerous other injuries.
